Jack Frost TT

The weather was great for today’s Jack Frost TT, VRV had a strong contingent of riders for today’s race, including the noodle thin climbing specialist Jason Freed, Mr. Endurance, Jeff Brock, Ivan Basso, Laird Novak and the El Capitan, Paul Sullivan.

After some of this jf1.JPG

Mr. Freed got busy with some of this warmup.JPG

from there Jason quickly dug into his pain locker and wasn’t seen again until the end of the race.

Jason went off first, then Laird, myself and followed up by Jeff and ironically we finished in that same order with the Shark pulling off an amazing time of :31:42 (23 mph avg) pretty damn good for a guy who says he hasn’t been training.  The rest of us trailed in seconds after that.

All in all it was a very fun event with a great team turn out and great team support thanks to James, Joy, Melissa and Heather showing up to cheer us on.  WAY TO GO VRV!

Cherry Pie – UPDATED

Today was VRV’s first race of the season, the much heralded Cherry Pie.  First let me say that this race was exceptionally well organized and run, plenty of volunteer help, corner marshals and lead and chase cars; hats off to the promoters for this one!

Now, then the racing, the day started with our only Cat 5 entrant Jeff Brock, who indicated that he was able to easily maintain contact with the field until the diabolical finish where he slowly slid through the field, final position unknown until results are posted. (26th overall) Overall he had a great feeling about the race and was happy to get the first one of the season under his belt.

My race didn’t start until almost 1:00pm and the field size seemed huge, at most points during the race we completely filled up the entire lane of traffic. (I’m going to guess and say that there was at least 65 total riders-actual Cat 4′s)  The pace was managable for the entire first lap, until we got to those diabolical finishing hills where I quickly slid through the field myself and spent the next 3 miles working on my TT skills trying to catch back, which I finally did with the help of a couple of other riders having the same issues.  The remainder of lap two saw a much higher overall pace as repeated attacks went out until Casey (Organic Athlete) jumped on the front and set a very even pace for the next 8 or so miles; unfortunately for Casey, no one else was willing to pull through and the remainder of the field bunched up behind him in anticipation of the finishing climbs.  As we rounded the final corner and began the first of the two climbs the entire field exploded, riders where wobbling across the road as the thought of a nap and a warm bottle called to them.  The final hill to the finish was wretched, with even more riders littered about as they tried to drag themselves across the line.

Not sure where I finished just yet,(31st overall) but like Jeff, pretty stoked to have the first one out of the way.  Who’d a thought, racing in just shorts and arm warmers in February!  Bring it on!

This Weather DOES NOT Suck

Got a couple of hours in today and barely got wet or dirty.  I managed to meet up with most of the team out at Sauvies for a little simulated TT effort…which brang me to the already clear realization that I am in fact S.L.O.W.  But who cares, at least it wasn’t raining!

Before the first pedals were turned in anger this year, Team Vista Ridge Velo held its first in-team competition to determine who was the very best mustache growerer.  After much strenous debate the winner was chosen.the-winner-1.jpg
it was clear that James had obviously been growing and grooming his ‘stache for some time, however he would have his hands full with the likes of these three the-contestants-1.jpg
After much deliberation by our judges the winner was porn-star-1.jpg
